Many believe that this story could explain the seasons of the year. The arrangement pleased neither Hades nor Demeter, but they were forced to accept it. in other stories, because Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds, she would then spend six months of Hades and the rest of the year of Demeter. In some depictions, Persephone spent a third of the year in the underworld and the rest on Mount Olympus. The portion of time varies depending on the story. Zeus decided that Persephone would spend the portion of the year with her husband Hades and the rest of her mother on Olympus. Demeter was infuriated with the response, and she was convinced that Hades had somehow tricked her daughter.Īfter a heated discussion, Demeter made it known that if her daughter did not return, she would never again make the earth fertile. When Persephone was asked where she would like to live, she told Zeus and Demeter that she wished to stay in the underworld with her husband. So he gave her one last gift, a pomegranate-in Greek mythology, it was believed that if one ate the food given to them by their captor, they would always return to that person. Hades had heard would Zeus proposed and readied his chariot to return Persephone, but he was terrified that Persephone would not return to him when given a choice. She saw a side to Hades that no one else had seen before, and she began to fall in love with him. Persephone in the Underworldĭuring her time in the underworld, Hades had beautiful gardens built for Persephone, and she was treated with respect and compassion. Zeus then promised to bring Persephone back from the underworld if it could be proved that Hades was holding her against her will. The cries of those suffering could even be heard on Mount Olympus, and Zeus knew that if he did not stop Demeter’s wrath, humanity would disappear. The actions of Demeter resulted in untold misery. The earth began to dry, harvests began to fail, plants withered, and animals died because of the lack of food, famine spread across the earth. ![]() She roamed the earth for days on end, searching and not fulfilling her duties as goddess of the harvest and fertility. Demeter was driven mad by her daughter’s disappearance. It was when the river Sion washed up the bells of Persephone that Demeter knew something dreadful had happened to her daughter. Furious that they were unable to protect her daughter, she cursed them with plumed bodies, scaly feet and wings they would now be called The Sirens. When she asked the Nymphs that she had left to watch over her daughter, they had no answer. When Demeter returned, her daughter was nowhere to be found. Upon seeing her friend descend deep into the underworld, she began to cry until she melted into a pool of her own tears form in the river Sion. The nymph Sion had seen the abduction, and she attempted to rescue Persephone, but she was no match for Hades. He grabbed Persephone before she was able to scream for help. From that chasm emerged Hades and his chariot of black horses. When she stooped down to pick the flower, the earth beneath her began to quake, and a gaping chasm soon appeared. Wandering into the garden alone, Persephone saw the narcissus flower and was immediately drawn to its beauty. Knowing that the nymphs would never let Persephone out of their sight, for fear of Demeter’s wrath, Zeus had Gaia plant a narcissus flower in a nearby garden. The next morning, Demeter and her daughter descended upon the earth, and Persephone was left with the nymphs of the sea as her guides and Watchers while her mother tended to the earth. ![]() ![]() ![]() Time is money, so don't waste mine or yours.Ģ0. Using higher atmospheric pressure around the body can speed up the effectiveness of the high-dose oxygen treatment. The treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning is high-dose oxygen. How do you get dangerous levels of carbon monoxide out of a person’s blood? Maintain your heating and air conditioning system regularly, usually just before each big change of season. Make sure any heating and air conditioning system is installed by trained professionals with proper ventilation. Replace old or faulty central heating and air conditioning units with new and improved models. CO detectors are most effective when used in conjunction with preventive maintenance. ![]() Install a carbon monoxide alarm on each level of your home as your first line of defense. Never use a cooking device-an oven, grill, or camp stove-to heat your home. A blocked exhaust pipe can cause CO to back up into your passenger area. If you get stuck in deep snow by the side of the road and decide to stay in your car and keep warm with your engine running, be sure to clear snow away from your exhaust pipe. Even minor collisions can cause breaks in your car’s exhaust system, allowing CO to enter into your passenger area. Never dismiss a fender bender as something you’ll get checked later. Never use ovens or grills to heat your home or garage. Never run lawnmowers, snowblowers, or other gas-powered engines in confined areas like garages or sheds. Never leave it running in the confined space of a garage, particularly if the garage is attached to the home. How do I protect myself and my family from carbon monoxide poisoning? Your garageĪlways back your car out of the garage to let it warm up. Too often, death from CO poisoning results with the victim simply falling asleep and never regaining consciousness. Medium exposure can cause you to experience a throbbing headache, drowsiness, disorientation, and an accelerated heart rate.Įxtreme exposure usually leads to unconsciousness, convulsions, cardiorespiratory failure, coma, and eventually death. Unfortunately, the symptoms are easily overlooked because they are often flu-like. Most people with a mild exposure to carbon monoxide experience headaches, fatigue, and nausea. What are some symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning? While there’s no risk of an explosion, as there would be with natural gas, the effects of CO in your blood are accumulative, and the longer you’re exposed to it the longer it takes to rid your body of its effects. It’s important to evacuate your home immediately when your CO alarm sounds. It works like a smoke alarm, sampling the air in your home and creating a loud alarm when levels of the gas are detected. The best way to alert you and your family to unsafe levels of CO is to install a carbon monoxide detector. Then, our blood cells attach with CO molecules instead of oxygen molecules, starving our organs from the oxygen they need.įor these reasons, CO is called the silent killer. We breathe in CO like normal air with no irritation to our nose or throats. ![]() Unlike natural gas or LP gas, which have a characteristic odor added to them to alert you, carbon monoxide has no fumes and no color. How do I know if carbon monoxide is present? Using kerosene heaters or charcoal grills indoors, or running a car in a garage can cause CO levels to rise high enough to result in death or serious illness. Vehicle exhaust fumes from attached garages also can become CO hazards. Your furnace, water heater, stove, space heaters, fireplace, woodstove, charcoal grill, and dryer can be sources of CO, especially if they are not in good working condition or have been installed without proper ventilation. Where does carbon monoxide come from?Ĭarbon monoxide is produced by devices that burn fuels. Many of those deaths happen during the winter months, when people are heating their homes and reducing the amount of outside ventilation.Įven if CO levels are not high enough to be fatal, they can produce serious illness. In a typical year, nearly 400 Americans die from carbon monoxide poisoning, usually in their own home or car. ![]() ![]() However, the maximum number of entities that are returned in a single query with LINQ Take operator is 1,000 and you may need to code more to retrieve what you want. However, if the string cannot be converted to a number, Number() will return NaN: let string = "hello" In this example, we have a string "42" which is successfully converted to the number 42 using the Number() function. If the conversion is successful, it returns a number otherwise, it returns NaN (which stands for "Not a Number"). The Number() function is a built-in global function in JavaScript that can be used to convert different data types, like strings, into numbers. We will cover the following methods for converting strings to numbers in JavaScript: 1. This is where converting a string to a number comes in handy. The user input is usually in the form of a string (a sequence of characters), but you need to convert it into a number to perform calculations. Imagine you are working on a web application, and you want to perform some arithmetic operations on user input. This is a common programming task, and understanding how to do it efficiently and correctly is an important skill for any programmer, especially those new to the language. In this blog post, we will explore different ways to convert a string to a number in JavaScript. ![]() The Math.floor() method is similar to the unary operator + but only returns the integer part of the string: Math. Just like bitwise not, unary operators are not happy to see other characters in the string and return NaN instead of 0 or guessing the number: + '10' // 10 '0xFF' - 15 // 240 '49.5' * 1 // 49.5 '100' / 2 // 50 '10,00' * 1 // NaN Math.floor() method Unary operators ( +, *, -, and /) can also be used for string conversion to numbers. It does not work for floating numbers and returns 0 instead of NaN if the string contains characters: ~ ~ 9.99 // 9 ~ ~ '50' // 50 ~ ~ '10.89' // 10 ~ ~ '10px' // 0īitwise not (~) can be a better choice to ensure the input string does not include any character while parsing it to an integer. If you want the parsing to fail with NaN if the string contains other symbols, Number() may actually be an excellent choice: Number ( '24' ) //24 Number ( '15.49' ) // 15.49 Number ( '10,350' ) // NaN Number ( '2rem' ) // NaN Bitwise Not ( ~)īitwise not (~) is another method that can be used to convert a string into an integer. If you are sure about the format of the number being parsed, use those methods instead. It's a less safe choice than parseInt() and parseFloat() for string to number conversion. However, if you pass a string that contains random characters, you will get NaN - a stand for "Not a Number." It takes one argument that can be an integer, a point number, a boolean value, or even a date object. Otherwise, it will be dropped from the result: parseFloat ( '9.49' ) // 9.99 parseFloat ( '50.00' ) // 50 parseFloat ( '3.5%' ) // 3.5 parseFloat ( '45,00' ) // 45 parseFloat ( 'He is 29' ) // NaN Number() methodĪs the name suggests, the Number() method converts a string into a number. Unlike parseInt(), parseFloat() does not parse hexadecimal strings to numbers. It only takes one parameter, which is the string to parse. The parseFloat() method converts a string into a floating point number. ![]() parseInt() can also be used to get a number from a string that may contain other characters (only if it starts with a number): parseInt ( '10M' ) // 10 parseInt ( '$10M' ) // NaN parseFloat() method The parseInt() method can also be used for parsing hexadecimal strings with radix value 16: parseInt ( 0xFF ) // 255 parseInt ( '0圎E', 16 ) // 238Īlways use parseInt() with a radix to avoid unexpected results. The second optional argument is the base number called radix: parseInt ( '45' ) // 45 parseInt ( '99.49' ) // 99 parseInt ( '123Greetings.png' ) // 123įor decimal numbers, the radix is always 10. The first argument is the string to convert. The parseInt() method converts a string into a whole number (an integer). ![]() Let's look at 6 different methods to convert a string into a number. '89') to represent a number.īut if you compare both, they won't be the same as they represent two different kinds of objects: const number1 = 89 const number2 = '89' if (number1 = number2 ) // Output => false There are multiple ways to convert a string into a number using JavaScript. ![]() ![]() ![]() Where does that make me a bad person?
